Install Rise Vision on a Raspberry Pi 3

UPDATE: Alan Clayton commented on April 17, 2017 that there is now a Pi version of the Rise Player. I have not tested it but it looks to be a better solution. You can see it here.

All of the tutorials I could find sucked, so I created my own, feel free to use it.

Download Raspbian Jessy from here.

Write Debian to your microSD car using the instructions here.

Plug everything in and after the Pi boots to the desktop we need to update Debian and install Chromium and the Rise Vision Chrome plugin.

Update Debian:

sudo apt-get update  
sudo apt-get upgrade  

Install Chromium:

wget -qO - | sudo apt-key add -  
echo "deb jessie main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list  
sudo apt-get update  
sudo apt-get install chromium-browser -y  

Install the Rise Vision Chromium Plugin:

Launch Chrome and download the Rise Vision plugin from here. After you install the app goto chrome://apps. Right-click on the Rise Player app and select create shortcuts and select Create.

Set the timezone:

echo "TZ='America/Detroit'; export TZ" >> ~/.profile  

Install unclutter to get rid of the mouse pointer when Rise Vision is running:

sudo apt-get install unclutter  

Set the Rise Vision player to start automatically at boot:

sudo mkdir /home/pi/.config/autostart  
sudo cp ~/Desktop/chrome-\*\*\*\*\*\*\*-Default.desktop /home/pi/.config/autostart/  

Disable the screen saver and timeout:

Create a file called

vi /home/pi/  

Add this to

xset s off  
xset s noblank  
xset -dpms  

Make it executable:

sudo chmod 777 /home/pi/  

Create a Desktop shortcut so we can launch the script at boot:

Create a file called disable_screen_timeout.desktop

sudo vi /usr/share/applications/disable_screen_timeout.desktop  

And add this to it:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Disable Screen Timeout  

Copy the Desktop Shortcut to the autostart directory:

sudo cp /usr/share/applications/disable_screen_timeout.desktop /home/pi/.config/autostart  

If your desktop has a thick black band around it you need to disable over scan.

Edit this file:

sudo vi /boot/config.txt  

Remove the comment from the flowing line:


So it looks like this:


Change your password and reboot the Pi:

Changing password for pi.  
(current) UNIX password:********
Enter new UNIX password:**********  
Retype new UNIX password:**********  
passwd: password updated successfully

sudo reboot
